VOLUNTEERS

The contribution of volunteers in getting things done in today's society cannot be overestimated. Volunteers - and the spirit of volunteerism - represent a mighty force when harnessed. Each volunteer is unique. They offer their services for many reasons, but have one thing in common-a willingness to give of themselves to help those in need.

Most non-profit agencies depend upon volunteers. Volunteers may determine policy, raise money, work in programs, or conduct liaison with governmental bodies. They contribute their time, energy and expertise.

Compensation for volunteers does not come in the form of money, but rather, in satisfaction and the conviction that what they are doing is important and "makes a difference."

Volunteerism is an action by people who care, and volunteering can be educational as well as a source of fulfillment and joy. But volunteers have responsibilities: To be dependable, prompt, efficient, and pleasant. They should perform to the same high standards expected of a paid worker. An effective volunteer has a sincere interest in the assigned task, accepts supervision, adheres to agency policies, and respects confidentiality.

Volunteers are entitled to be assigned worthwhile challenging duties: to be kept informed about what is "going on" and to be provided with adequate training and orientation.

Nationwide, over 37 million volunteers work an average of nine hours per week. This translates into more than 17 billion donated hours in a year. Coffee County's public and private agencies could not survive without the efforts of volunteers. The Coffee County Emergency Management Agency wishes to acknowledge and thank all volunteers for the countless hours, loving care, and Herculean efforts they have contributed. If you wish to assist us as a volunteer, please send your name, address, and telephone number to:
